Aug 15, day 13
We began our day in beautiful 54 degree weather. This was the day to see the geysers. We drove straight to the Old Faithful area and walked over to see what we thought was old faithful. Instead it was Castle Geyser and was spewing lots of steam and mist. It was not an actual eruption but was pretty exciting to watch and photograph.
After staying there for a few minutes, we parked nearer what was actually Old Faithful and joined the throngs of people awaiting the eruption.
We got VERY lucky as it erupted about 15 minutes later. It spouts steam and smoke for a while and then suddenly shoots a huge stream of water into the air accompanied by cheers and ahhh's from the crowd. If we had missed it, the next eruption would have been a couple hours later. A bucket list thing checked off.
The visitor center there has quite a lot of interesting info. I had packed our picnic lunch for that day but instead of eating it at one of the picturesque spots for picnics, we opted to eat in the safety of the truck while a severe thunderstorm rumbled in and out. After the storm, we continued on our journey of seeing geysers, none of them comparing to Old Faithful!
Amazing the number of holes in the ground giving off the steam of the geyser below. I took lots of pictures and then stopped. They all seem to look like the same pieces of ground after a while.
The afternoon brought another round of laundry and planning for the next day. And enjoying wine with our neighbor campers, Terry and Tina from Las Vegas.
